MASTER Camping Packing List: Basic Equipment and Essentials

The success of a camp trip rests largely on the packing list. Surely you could make do without all your “luxuries” from home (as is the point of camping), but being organized with a good camping packing list can make a camp trip all the more enjoyable! Herein you will find a great camping packing list but also learn the steps to create your camping list own.

Camping Packing Checklist

My mother always makes lists for everything. Her success is evidenced of the value of lists. I’ve seen how she handles events in her lift with ease. I’m pleased to say that this lesson has carried over well mom, and that I now also make lists.

In this post I will give you a basic camping checklist but it is important for you to know how you can customize this list and take it further to suit the style of your camp trip.

Making a Camping Equipment List

Basic

To make a basic camping packing list, I think of two things:

  1. My day-to-day routine
  2. Rooms of our house

Day-To-Day Routine

From the basic checklist above, I walk through my daily routine and think through the items I use everyday.

For example: when I get up, I usually make myself a cup of coffee and read. At some point I’ll go to the washroom and get dressed. In envisioning this routine, I record that I may need the following equipment: water, a pot or tin kettle to boil water in, a stove and its fuel, a cup for my coffee, clothes to get dressed into and toilet paper plus toiletries to get ready for the day.

Then I ask the important question, “can I go without any this for a day or two (or as long as your camp trip is)”. If not, I’ll add it to my list.

Rooms in the House

As I make my camping packing list, I work through the rooms in our house. For example, watch this basic list below correspond with certain rooms in the house that we are creating in the outdoors.

Bedroom

  • Sleeping Tent
  • Bedding (sleeping pad, pillow, blankets, sleeping bag)

Kitchen

  • Propane stove and fuel
  • Lighter / Matches
  • Pan and / or Pot
  • Plate, spoon, fork, knife
  • Mugs or cups
  • Cooler + Ice
  • Dish Scraper (THE BEST – must have!)
  • Dishcloth
  • Food + Water

Bathroom

  • Toiletries (toothbrush / paste, soap, etc.)
  • Toilet Paper

Living Room

  • Camping chair (chairs similars to ours are linked here)

All Rooms

  • Firewood
  • Flashlight
  • Clothes

Checkboxes

Make this list a checklist, so that you can return to it the day you leave and scan through the items not checked off.

Basic and Customizable Camping Packing List

I hope that has been helpful as you get ready for your camp trip. Happy list making and may you have a great and successful camp trip.

I thought it would be helpful to include our “Master Camping List“. If we are going on a big trip where we will be away for a long period or doing some kind of special activity like fishing, I will take many more things on a camp trip. That’s when I find the Master Camping List works better because I can cross of the items we don’t need rather than trying to remember everything that I should pack.

From every camp trip we return from, I return to the list and add anything I wished that we had. So this list has stood the test of time and is our greatest “master packing list”.
